A new reverse type for this emission
Lot 2764
Licinius I. Follis (Bronze, 20 mm, 2.59 g, 12 h), Rome, 314-315. IMP LICINIVS P F AVG Laureate and cuirassed bust of Licinius I to right. Rev. MARTI CON-S-ERVATORI / R - F / X / R T Mars standing front, but slightly turned to right, head to right, holding inverted spear in his right hand and placing his left on shield set on the ground. RIC -. Apparently unpublished and unique. Somewhat smoothed and with a thin flan crack, otherwise, about very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, ex Savoca 160th Blue Auction, 8 April 2023, 1764.

No coin featuring Mars had been documented from this emission before. It was previously believed that Mars had ceased to appear on coinage with the earlier R F/R✱P emission. However, this coin demonstrates that Mars persisted, albeit briefly, into the RX F/RP emission.
